AP earns World Press Photo honors

Photos of a deadly Ethiopian Airlines plane crash, California wildfires, Brazilian sports fans and Hurricane Dorian’s destruction earned The Associated Press top honors in the 2020 World Press Photo Contest.

Photographer Mulugeta Ayene’s powerful photos of the aftermath of the March 2019 plane crash near Addis Ababa that killed all 157 people on board earned first prize in the spot news stories category. Ayene was also nominated for World Press Photo of the Year and Photo Story of the Year for his coverage of the crash.

Photographer Noah Berger earned second prize in Environment Singles for his photo of firefighters battling the Marsh Fire in California.

Rio de Janeiro-based photographer Silvia Izquierdo earned second prize in Sports Singles for an image showing fans of Brazil’s Flamengo football team cheering during a watch party.

Photographer Ramon Espinosa, based in Havana, Cuba, earned third prize in Spot News Singles for his image of volunteers wading along a flooded road in Freeport, Grand Bahama, after Hurricane Dorian devastated the island.
