Election polling is unlike any other kind of public opinion research, because you can measure your work against a known result – the actual tally of ballots cast. It means that when The Associated Press debuted AP VoteCast in the 2018 midterm elections, we’d know by the end of Election Day if our replacement for the in-person exit poll was a success.

Beyond exit polls: A new way to survey voters

In its search for new ways to survey a changing electorate, AP continued its experiments aimed at evolving the traditional, in-person exit poll in 2017, testing a new approach aimed at reaching both those who vote in person on Election Day and the increasing number of voters who cast ballots early -- roughly 40 percent in 2016.
