Calling on governments to create ‘a culture of safety for journalism’
A UNESCO conference in Paris sought to attract decision makers of news organizations so they could share good practices on the safety of journalists and “more proactively highlight the issue of journalist safety.”

“Several times a year, dedicated groups like this one gather to discuss the growing violence against journalists,” Associated Press Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll told the Inter American Press Association this past weekend. “And every year the outrages grow, the bodies of our friends and colleagues fall and our anger boils over. And yet, nothing changes.”
Setting the standards for journalists’ safety
The Associated Press has joined 25 other news organizations and journalism groups in endorsing an unprecedented set of safety standards designed to protect freelance reporters on dangerous assignments.
